To the Tune of Survival

India Arie provides us with more than a catchy tune. Her music carries a real message worth listening to. She has sold over 3.3 million records in the US and 10 million worldwide. Her accolades include being nominated for a Grammy 21 times and winning 4 including Best R&B album. She has collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Akon, John Legend, Adele and many others. Aries’ greatest collaboration was a song that she performed with Pink.

The song entitled “I am Not My Hair” is a song about how (Breast Cancer and Chemotherapy/Took away her crown and glory/She promised God if she was to survive/She would enjoy every day of her life). According to Arie, the original version of “I Am Not My Hair” originated from Pink's decision to do away with her locks. However, the last verse was written after Melissa Etheridge's performance at the 2005 Grammy Awards, where she appeared bald from chemotherapy to treat breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Help support India Arie on November 3, as she empowers women who suffer from breast cancer. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the box office.

You can get involved in your community as well. CrossFit Rapture located on 285 Orinoco Dr., Brightwaters, is holding Barbells for Boobs on October 5. Joe Abruzzo, son of a breast cancer survivor, will be hosting the fundraiser. The charity helps raise money to provide mammograms for women. Barbells for Boobs will get you warmed up for The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Walk. The walk will be held on October 6 at Dowling College, Brookhaven Campus and again on October 20, at Jones Beach State Park. Join the fight and win tickets to other events here at The Paramount.
