One Love, One Life and a Long Legacy

May 11th will mark the 33rd anniversary of the short lived life of Bob Marley. While he had many triumphs during his life, it wasn’t until years after his passing that he earned; a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame, was named Time Magazine’s Best Album of the Century, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with other accolades. In honor of Bob Marley, we are sharing some of the lesser known facts about his life.
  1. Bob’s father was a 50-year-old white British naval captain named Norval Sinclair Marley.
  2. 21-year old Robert Nesta Marley and 19-year old Alfarita “Rita” Constantia Anderson are married in Trench Town, Jamaica. Rita was part of the I-Threes, who sang back up for the Wailers.
  3. After his wedding Bob Marley moved to Delaware to work and save money for his new family and for his hopeful music business.
  4. His official website states that Bob fathered eleven children with several other women while he was married.
  5. As Bob Marley and The Wailers rehearsed at his Kingston home, an unsuccessful assassination attempt was made on his life. Miraculously, no one was killed; Bob escaped with minor gunshot wounds, Rita underwent surgery to remove a bullet that grazed her head. Bob’s manager, Don Taylor, was shot five times and critically wounded; he was airlifted to Miami’s Cedars of Lebanon Hospital for the removal of a bullet lodged against his spinal cord.
  6. The One Love Peace Concert is held at The National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. During Jamming, Marley joins the hands of political rivals Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP) in an unforgettable and historic moment.

  10. The Wailers will be coming to The Paramount on May 23rd. Original members of The Wailers included Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, and Barrett Brothers, Carlton and Aston. Today Aston leads the band as it continues to promote peace, love and equality through music.

Bob Marley was an advocate for social change and used the power of music to bring people together while freeing them from their problems. His music is timeless and lives on long after his passing for it is he who said, “Live for yourself and you will live in vain. Live for others, and you will live again.”
